Knysna: A Beginning

Knysna: A Beginning

When our plane finally descended through the clouds, I was at once taken away by the beauty of the Western Cape of South Africa. On our right: green meadows that joined up in with rolling hills that quickly joined in with sharp ascending mountains covered by a heavy marine layer. On our left: the Indian Ocean–a deep blue unlike anything we have in the color palettes in America. Interspersed with the blues are hundreds, if not thousands, of whitecaps crashing violently into the shoreline.
South Africa is a beautiful land.
After touching down in George, South Africa, our team of nine men and one woman set out driving east along the N2 to our destination: the resort town of Knysna. Knysna exhibits the beauty and hardship of South Africa.
Located at the heads of the Knysna River and the Indian Ocean, Knysna is a destination resort town for well-to-do South Africans. Luxury. Beauty. Pleasure. Grace. Youth. Wealth. All of these await you in Knysna.
Juxtaposed with these–no less than one mile from the center of affluence–is the Township. Poverty. Heartache. Struggle. Pain. All of these await you in the Township.
South Africa is full of beauty and hardship.
It is in this that our team sets out to share the love of Christ. Christ looks at the hardship and offers eternal hope in Him. Christ looks at the beauty and promises eternal riches in Him. Christ will change South Africa.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” -Ephesians 2:8-10
